Feeling safe and comfortable at home is essential. Assistive Technology and Home Modifications can make everyday tasks easier, reduce risks, and support your independence.

Through the Assistive Technology and Home Modifications (ATHM) scheme, part of the Support at Home program, you may be eligible for dedicated funding to access equipment, devices, and home improvements that help you stay confident in your own home.

These supports range from simple mobility aids to more complex home adjustments — all designed to help you continue living the life you choose.

Services Included in AT-HM.

Depending on your needs and assessment outcome, Assistive Technology & Home Modifications may include:

Assistive Technology.

Assistive Technology includes equipment and devices that support mobility, safety, communication, and daily living.

Supports may include:

  • Walking frames, wheelchairs, or mobility scooters
  • Shower chairs, commodes, raised toilet seats, and other bathroom supports
  • Sensor lights, alarms, and fall prevention devices
  • Communication aids, memory supports, and alert systems
  • Adaptive kitchen tools and eating aids

These items help make tasks easier and safer, allowing you to maintain independence and continue doing the activities you enjoy.

Home Modifications.

Home Modifications are practical changes to your home environment that improve safety and accessibility.

These may include:

  • Grab rails and handrails
  • Ramps, step free access, and threshold adjustments
  • Nonslip flooring or coatings
  • Lever taps, door handles, and accessible fixtures
  • Bathroom adjustments or structural changes for long term mobility needs

Modifications are tailored to your home and your goals, helping you move around more confidently and safely.

Services Excluded from AT-HM.

The Assistive Technology & Home Modifications Scheme generally does not fund:

  • General household or lifestyle items that are not related to your care needs
  • Equipment or items funded through another government program
  • Items intended for workplace use
  • Public transport-related equipment
  • Products or modifications that do not support your assessed care needs
  • Items for children or non-aged care purposes

How Can I Access This Service?

To access Assistive Technology or Home Modifications, you will need an Aged Care Assessment through My Aged Care.

During your assessment, the assessor will determine whether you need Assistive Technology, Home Modification support, or both. If approved:

Your funding tier (low, medium, or high) will be included in your Support Plan.

Funding is separate from your regular Support at Home budget

You can begin accessing AT-HM supports as soon as your approval is in place

FAQ's.

What is Assistive Technology?

Assistive Technology refers to equipment and devices that help you complete everyday tasks more safely and independently. Examples include walking frames, shower chairs, personal alarms and mobility scooters.

Home Modifications are physical changes made to your home to improve accessibility and safety. Examples include grab rails, ramps, handrails, bathroom modifications and widened doorways.

Funding is provided in tiers — up to $500 (low), $2,000 (medium), or $15,000 (high). Higher amounts may be approved with clinical evidence.

No. AT-HM funding is generally valid for 12 months. Extensions may be granted for complex needs or progressive conditions.

Most items and all structural modifications require an Occupational Therapy (OT) assessment. Cura can arrange this for you.

Yes. Your assessor may approve one or both depending on your needs.

What if my needs change later? You can request a reassessment through My Aged Care if your mobility, safety, or home environment changes.

AT-HM is supported through its own specific funding stream. This means your regular Support at Home or CHSP funds are not used for equipment or home modifications, as these services are financed separately. et, those routine funds cannot be used to purchase AT-HM items or modifications.
