Home Care FAQs
What is a Home Care Package (HCP)?
A Home Care Package (HCP) is a government-funded program designed to help older Australians who need coordinated services to help them stay at home. The program provides a subsidy towards a package of care, services, and case management to meet the individual needs of older people. There are four levels of Home Care Packages to cater to different levels of care and support needs, ranging from basic care needs to high care needs.
How do I know if I'm eligible for the HCP?
Eligibility for a Home Care Package is determined through an assessment by an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). To be eligible, you must be an older person who needs coordinated services to help you stay at home. The assessment will consider your physical, medical, psychological, and social needs. If you’re considering a Home Care Package for yourself or a loved one, reach out today to learn how we can help you with the application process.
What is the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP)?
The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) is an entry-level aged care program for older Australians who need some assistance with daily tasks to live independently at home. The CHSP provides a basic level of support through services like domestic help, personal care, meals and food preparation, respite care, and transport. This program is meant to help those with manageable needs that can be mostly met through scheduled support.
How do I know if I'm eligible for the CHSP?
Eligibility for the CHSP is also determined through an assessment, but it is typically conducted by a Regional Assessment Service (RAS). The service is intended for those aged 65 years and older (or 50 years and older for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people) who are still managing well at home but require a small amount of assistance with daily tasks. If you want to learn more about whether you or a loved one is eligible for this program, contact us today to speak with a member of our staff
What are the differences between the Commonwealth Home Support Program and Home Care Packages?
The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) and Home Care Packages (HCP) are both government-funded programs aimed at assisting older Australians to live independently at home, but they cater to different levels of needs:
Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP): This program is designed as an entry-level service for older people who need minimal assistance to maintain their independence at home. It offers a basic level of support, which might include help with household tasks, basic home maintenance, personal care, and transport. Services are typically delivered on an ad-hoc basis, according to the specific service rather than a comprehensive coordinated plan.
Home Care Packages (HCP): This program provides four levels of care packages to support people with moderate to high care needs. Unlike CHSP, HCPs are coordinated and planned care programs that are tailored to meet the complex and ongoing care needs of individuals. Each package level allows for more hours of care and a greater range of services, managed by a care provider like CÜRA who works with the client to develop a personalised care plan.
