Home Care FAQs
What is a Home Care Package (HCP)?
A Home Care Package (HCP) is a government-funded initiative designed to help older Australians receive care services in their own homes. These packages are intended for those with complex care needs that go beyond what the Commonwealth Home Support Programme can provide. The program offers four levels of support, ranging from basic care needs (Level 1) to high care needs (Level 4), each progressively offering more hours of care and a broader range of services.
How do I know if I'm eligible for the HCP?
Eligibility for a Home Care Package is determined through a comprehensive assessment conducted by an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). This assessment evaluates your care needs and your ability to manage day-to-day life. Factors considered include physical, medical, psychological, and social needs. If you’re considering a Home Care Package for yourself or a loved one, reach out today to learn how we can help you with the application process.
What is the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP)?
The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) is an entry-level care service meant to support older people who need some assistance to remain living independently at home. It offers a range of services such as help with household tasks, personal care, meal services, transport, and social support, tailored to help manage with daily tasks but not extensive enough for complex care needs.
How do I know if I'm eligible for the CHSP?
Eligibility for the CHSP is is generally for those aged 65 and over (or 50 and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people) who need minor assistance with daily tasks. Eligibility is determined through a simpler assessment by a Regional Assessment Service (RAS). If you want to learn more about whether you or a loved one is eligible for this program, contact us today to speak with a member of our staff
What are the differences between the Commonwealth Home Support Program and Home Care Packages?
The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) and Home Care Packages (HCP) are both government-funded programs aimed at assisting older Australians to live independently at home, but they cater to different levels of needs:
Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP): The CHSP is designed as an entry-level aid program intended for older Australians who require a modest level of support to maintain their independence at home. It provides basic assistance services such as domestic help, personal care, meal preparation, and transport. This program is particularly suited for those who need occasional help with daily tasks to continue living comfortably in their own homes. CHSP services are delivered based on specific needs but do not include comprehensive case management, which means it’s primarily targeted at individuals who can manage with less frequent and less intensive support.
Home Care Packages (HCP): HCPs are intended for older individuals who require a more comprehensive level of in-home care due to complex care needs. These packages are divided into four levels, ranging from Level 1 for basic care needs to Level 4 for high care needs. Each level provides a different subsidy amount, which increases with the complexity of the care required. The program includes tailored services such as nursing, personal care, podiatry, physiotherapy, and more, all coordinated by a care provider. The care provider collaborates with the client to create a personalised care plan that adapts over time to meet their evolving needs, ensuring a holistic approach to care and support within the home environment.
